We are pleased to invite your application for the 2008 Executive Leadership and Management Institute at Stanford University.
Our Association has sponsored some kind of professional development at Stanford each summer for more than forty years. Its purpose, though, has changed from an exclusive course on business affairs to a comprehensive experience covering the full range of skills needed for success in leadership positions. It is designed for those in higher education who need to function successfully within the culture, structures, and values of colleges and universities, whether they are large or small, public or private, teaching or research-oriented.
Geographically, the Institute draws participants from throughout the nation, its territories and abroad. Professionally, participants come from many backgrounds. The Institute has enrolled administrative/finance vice presidents, provosts, directors of personnel services, university police chiefs; academic deans, research administrators, public relations officials, campus architects, bookstore directors, physical plant staff, directors of statewide associations, and fiscal staff in state higher education commissions. This diversity greatly enriches the Institute’s sessions and provides a wide perspective on higher education.
We welcome your participation in this unique professional development experience.

About The Executive Leadership and Management Institute
August 1 - 8, 2008
The Institute is rigorous and interactive, emphasizing in-depth discussion of issues, with time to explore and reflect. Participants are challenged by ideas and conversations which break down the barriers to honest exchange.
The result is change in the style and perspective of each participant, along with the opportunity to establish a professional network that can last a lifetime.
The Institute is a “total immersion” experience for one week--a time for in-depth thought about each person’s style of leadership. It is a balance of study, intensity, and fun.
The Institute mixes cutting-edge ideas from faculty with candid observations from participants. There are hours of sessions and discussion, great social events, and some time alone.
The ELMI has long been held at Stanford University, one of the geographically largest and most impressive campuses in the world. For the Institute’s goals, Stanford ideally provides “retreat style” accommodations within an extremely impressive institution of higher education.
Those attend the ELMI come from a wide diversity of institutions, as shown in the ELMI’s page entitled “Alumni.” However, all share high personal goals and are willing to work at practicing leadership skills and broadening their perspectives.
Specifically, the Institute attracts:
Senior-level leaders, or those serving as staff to them, who seek to understand the larger environment of higher education in America and institutions different from their own.
Middle managers who must manage both “up” and “down” the campus ladder. They manage administrative units, implement the policies of senior leadership, and are responsible for explaining institutional goals.
Those new to higher education who come from staff positions or from leadership roles outside academia, but who want to better understand the culture and decision-making process within their institution.
Faculty members who currently serve in administrative positions or would like to.
We welcome your application for 2008. Please read all web pages associated with the ELMI and then, to apply, send an e-mail to whpickens@aol.com. In that email, include your name, position title, campus or agency, office address, telephone, email address, a description of current position’s responsibilities (a resume is fine if these are included), and the names of two individuals on campus who currently know you well.
