The Executive Leadership and Managment Institute at Stanford

July 31 through August 7, 2009
(Friday Noon through the Following Friday Noon)

WACUBO is pleased to announce that the 2009 Executive Leadership Institute is now open for applications.  The Institute’s mission is to offer participants a premier experience in leadership development within the culture and circumstances of higher education institutions.

The Institute is a “total immersion” experience for one week--a time for in-depth thought about each person’s style of leadership.  It is a balance of study, intensity, and fun.

"It takes real commitment to create positive transformation . That's why more than 90 percent of people who attend short-term seminars see no improvement in their lives. They don't take the time to implement what they learn and all of their notes usually end up collecting dust."

- Jack Canfield, et. al., The Power of Focus (2000).

The Institute is rigorous and interactive, emphasizing in-depth discussion of issues, with time to explore and reflect.  Participants are challenged by ideas and conversations which break down the barriers to honest exchange.   The result is change in styles and perspectives, along with the opportunity to establish a professional network that can last a lifetime.

The ELMI’s central feature is its conscious tailoring to the needs and situation of each participant, and so enrollment is limited to 35.  The experience is not simply about leadership in general but how each person can see specific ways to exercise leadership and be more effective on campus.

For forty-two years, the ELMI has been held at Stanford University, one of the geographically largest and most impressive campuses in the world.  For the Institute’s goals, Stanford ideally provides “retreat style” accommodations within an extremely impressive institution of higher education.

It brings together a wide range of people who interact with a dedicated faculty of nationally-recognized presenters and seasoned leaders in higher education.  The ELMI combines research and theories with practical techniques and information useful immediately.   Providing an open and personally supportive environment is a high priority.

Finally, the ELMI’s sessions and activities are organized around situations which, over the long run, make or break the careers of leaders in higher education.   Its goals are:

Increasing the self-awareness of administrators as leaders.  ... to help participants see themselves as others do, and to understand the different strategic roles necessary to be successful in a higher education environment.  Special emphasis is placed on staying flexible and being resilient.

Improving skills in strategic thinking and effective action.  ... to develop habits of setting realistic goals, solving problems early, communicating clearly, anticipating the responses of others, successfully managing conflict, enhancing team building skills,  and evaluating progress honestly—while appreciating the importance of a work/personal life balance.  Special emphasis is placed on assessing and improving public speaking skills.

Establishing an enduring network for support and commitment to continuing professional development.   …to forge professional relationships with peers and mentors who can later provide career advice, information about solving campus problems, and personal support.  Special emphasis is placed on providing an open and individually supportive environment.

Those who attend the ELMI come from a wide diversity of institutions, as shown in the ELMI’s page entitled “Alumni.”  However, all share high personal goals and are willing to work at practicing leadership skills and broadening their perspectives.  Specifically, the Institute attracts:

Senior-level leaders, or those serving as staff to them, who seek to understand the larger environment of higher education in America and institutions different from their own.

Middle managers who must manage both “up” and “down” the campus ladder.   They manage administrative units, implement the policies of senior leadership, and are responsible for explaining institutional goals.

Those new to higher education who come from staff positions or from leadership roles outside academia, but who want to better understand the culture and decision-making process within their institution.

Faculty members who currently serve in administrative positions or would like to.

Applications

Your application is welcome for 2009.  Please read all web pages associated with the ELMI before deciding and then, to apply, send an e-mail to whpickens@aol.com.

In that email, include your name, position title, campus or agency, office address, telephone, email address, a description of current position’s responsibilities (a resume is fine if these are included), and the names of two individuals on campus who know you well now.   We will communicate with you within ten business days of your application.  Thank you for considering the ELMI at Stanford.
