This year's Annual Meeting is at the Sheraton Wildhorse Pass Resort in Chandler, Arizona, one of the cities near Phoenix, Arizona that constitute the greater Phoenix metropolitan area and Maricopa County. Maricopa County is a sprawling part of the southwest, covering over 9,200 square miles and serving as the home to more than 3.7 million people or more than half of the State's population. The single largest community in the county is the City of Phoenix, which is the nation's fifth largest city. The county and state continue to experience among the fastest annual rates of population growth in the nation.
Despite the growing population and development, the area retains much of the great natural beauty of the Sonoran desert. The resort, itself, is set in the midst of natural desert, with a backdrop of nearby mountains, vultures and hawks freely flying overhead and wild horses roaming nearby. Horseback riders, bikers and hikers have many options to enjoy the mountains and native cacti and other desert plants in the many muncipal parks maintained by the City of Phoenix and the county and other local communities. An outdoor activity that is more structured like golf? The area boasts of dozens and dozens of public and private (but open to the public) golf courses and enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year to ensure that it is possible to play just about any day.
Want to see one of the seven natural wonders? It's a 5 hour drive to the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon. Take an extra day or two around the conference to visit.
Cultural and entertainment opportunities abound. There are many museums and cultural points of interest: the Heard (an jewel that is dedicated to the study of the southwest), the Phoenix Art Museum, the Arizona Science Center, Taliesen West, performing arts centers in Tempe, Chandler, Mesa, Phoenix and many other concert venues such as in Phoenix and Scottdsdale. Visit nearby ancient Native American ruins at the Pueblo Grande museum or Casa Grande museum. Take in a Diamondbacks baseball game at the spectacular Chase Field. See a movie. Great restaurants featuring fine Southwestern and Mexican fare are too numerous to mention but so are the dining opportunities for countless other cuisines.
