Mark your calendars for the WACUBO 2017 annual conference, which will be held April 30-May 3, 2017 in Seattle. This year’s theme, “Trendsetting for Success,” has driven the development of an informative and valuable conference for financial and administrative leaders at our institutions.
Needs and expectations of key stakeholders, including learners, employers, boards, and legislators, continue to evolve. Our institutions need to be more agile and responsive to remain competitive, relevant and financially sustainable to be effective in their role as strategic partners in the success of our institutions.
The conference leadership team and dozens of volunteers from across the region have been working for over a year to develop excellent content for this year’s program, as well as events and activities to showcase Seattle and to create opportunities for you to connect with your colleagues and business partners. Our opening keynote will be Patrick Lencioni, a true pioneer in leadership and business. Lencioni is a New York Times best-selling author and according to the Wall Street Journal “one of America’s top five speakers” and named by Fortune magazine as “one of the new gurus you should know.” Lencioni is the architect of organizational health, a concept that he calls the last competitive advantage in business today. Lencioni’s 11 best-selling business books have sold nearly 5 million copies. His books include The Advantage, The Five Dysfunctions of Teams, and Death by Meetings, they tackle topics such as organizational health, leadership, and teams.
Addressing the model in his cornerstone book, The Advantage, Lencioni makes the overwhelming case that organizational health “will surpass all other disciplines in business as the greatest opportunity for improvement and competitive advantage.” While too many leaders are still limiting their search for advantage to conventional and largely exhausted areas like marketing, strategy and technology, Lencioni believes there is an untapped gold mine sitting right beneath them. Instead of trying to become smarter, he asserts that leaders and organizations need to shift their focus to becoming healthier, allowing them to tap into the more-than sufficient intelligence and expertise they already have. He defines a healthy organization as one with minimal politics and confusion, high degrees of morale and productivity, and low turnover among good people. Drawing on his experience consulting to some of the world’s leading teams and reaffirming many of the themes cultivated in his other best-sellers, Lencioni reveals the four steps to achieving long-term success.
