First-Time BMI Attendees Getting Connected

Chances are you knew someone at the 2018 BMI, since there were 277 attendees for the 2018 BMI at the University of California at Santa Barbara. 2016 marked the 60th Anniversary of BMI and the participant reviews proved it is still going strong!

You shouldn’t be surprised if a colleague urges you to attend WACUBO’s 2019 Business Management Institute, August 4-8, 2019 at UC Santa Barbara. Why? Because 98.91% of the attendees indicated they would recommend BMI to a colleague.

2018 marked the 62nd year of BMI and the participant reviews proved it is still going strong! Here are a few testimonials from the post-BMI evaluations regarding participant experiences:

The content was pertinent and right on point.
My overall experience was outstanding. I appreciated the efforts and opportunities that faculty and class leaders provided to encourage us to work as groups to enhance learning and connections.
Relevant content, excellent facilitators, and great group discussions. I met wonderful collaborators.
The people – it was extremely easy to meet, connect and learn with many different individuals.
BMI is a unique opportunity to meet and learn from others at all skill levels from a wide variety of positions in higher education.

Special Thanks

Special thanks to our 33 BMI Faculty members. Among them our Class Leaders that spent the day in the classroom and also taught courses. They introduced faculty in their classroom, answered questions, kept the pace moving, and distributed certificates in the classroom on the closing day. Our thanks to Class Leaders Sue Anderson, UC San Diego (ret) in Track 4; Renate Wigfall, CSU Northridge (ret) in (Track 3; Diane Fennig, Human Capital Group in Track 2); and, Kori Wetzel, University of Utah in Track 1. Also special thanks to the Track 3 small group case study facilitators who were present throughout BMI. They were: A. Cathleen Greiner, Rancho Santiago Community College District; Ryan Hagemann, Western Oregon University; Jeffrey West, University of Utah; LJ Bolton, Utah State University, and Class Leader Renate Wigfall.

About the Program

The two general sessions, when participants leave their track courses to meet together, offered two very different types of programs.

The opening general session featured Shola Richards, formerly of UCLA Health Systems. His inspirational message on positivity and civility set the tone for powerful individual learning and engaged group dynamics.

The closing general session brought together four diverse individuals serving in the role of CFO/CBO at higher education institutions to share with us their leadership journey and perspectives on the future. WACUBO 2019 President Arch Asawa, Soka University of America moderated the panel including: Robin Aspinall, Claremont McKenna College (ret 6/30); Danny Kim, California State University-Fullerton; and Lorraine Arvin, Reed College.

Intense classroom days gave way to cool evenings with fun and relaxing events, including a picnic at the beach and fiesta night to unwind and make more connections with other participants. So just in case you were thinking it was all learning and no recovery time for the brain, think again!
